Don’t you agree that it’s hard to enjoy a good video without any music? That’s right; the reason for this is because there is no such thing as a good video with no music. There are a few tips that you should have in mind when trying to add music to your audiovisual project.
A key thing to consider is the mood. You need to keep in mind the type of video you want to create and to do this you need to ask, who is your audience? What are you trying to communicate? What are your intentions with the video? Is there a particular vibe you want to create? These are just a few questions that can help you to get on the right path when looking for the most suitable theme for your project. Music communicates a range of emotions. This is why you should be careful when choosing a particular song or soundtrack. If you choose the wrong music, there’s a high chance that the viewer many misinterpret the message that you’re trying to pass on to your viewers.
We will be using Adobe Premiere Pro as an example on how to add music to a video made with this editing software.
Follow the steps below to add background music to your video:
Click on ‘Window’ > ‘Project’ to reveal the ‘Project’ panel. The audio file you just imported will be selected. Double-click on it to open it in the ‘Source’ panel and you will see the waveform. You can reproduce the audio file here if you want to listen to it. Drag the audio clip to the sequence in the Timeline panel. You can drop it on any audio track below the video tracks. Trim the audio clip as you would with a video clip.
Press the spacebar to reproduce the sequence in the ‘Program’ panel (upper right panel). Pressing the spacebar again stops playback. Drag the blue playhead to wherever you want playback to begin.
If your audio clip is too loud or too soft compared to the rest of your sequence, you can change the volume of each audio track independently. Click on ‘Window’ > ‘Audio Track Mixer’ > [sequence name] to reveal the track mixer for your sequence. The playback controls at the bottom of the ‘Audio Track Mixer’ panel allow you to ‘play’, ‘stop’, and even ‘loop’ the sequence playback. As your sequence plays or loops, move the sliders up and down to increase or decrease the volume of each individual audio track in your sequence. Slide the Master control to adjust the overall audio level.
Now your video looks great and sounds terrific too! Keep practicing with audio tracks and see how proper mixing can make your video sound good.
Once you take into account the mood and technical aspects of your video, you will have the recipe for a perfect audiovisual project. If you haven’t, why don’t you give it a try? Tell us what you think!
