We know how important is to celebrate Pride and celebrate who you are. Music is our way to commemorate it. We've chosen some tracks that reflect the power of love and equality.
During Pride month we celebrate equality and acceptance; we also celebrate the work of the LGBTQI+ community and the importance of raising awareness of issues affecting them.
On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Riots took place in Greenwich Village in New York City, US. The Stonewall Riots, also known as Stonewall Uprising, started when the New York City police raided a gay club called Stonewall Inn. This club was an important institution in Greenwich Village because it welcomed drag queens, it was also a nightly home for lots of runaways and homeless gay people, and lastly, but not less important, it was one of the few gay bars that allowed dancing. At the time, "homosexual acts" were considered illegal in most US states. Restaurants, bars and clubs were at risk of being shut down if they had gay employees or gay patrons. Police raids were quite common back in that time, but on June 28, 1969, members of the LGBTQI+ community decided to fight back. When NYPD officers entered the club and arrested 13 people, including employees and people violating the state's gender-appropriate clothing statute, the neighborhood residents, who were fed up with the police harassment and the social discrimination, stood up and hung around outside of the bar. In just a few minutes, it started a full-blown riot that lasted for five days. Supporters showed up canting slogans like "gay power" and "we shall overcome".
Even though the Stonewall Riots didn't actually start the gay rights movement, it was a marking point. It was what fueled its growth and led to the creation of gay activist groups in the US and around the world. This day is now celebrated in honor of all the brave LGBTQI+ members who stood up to the system and protested for equality. We celebrate love and equality with this new collection which contains uplifting and empowering songs.
